Commentaire :

The formula according to which Harutyun Chalikyan works is achieving maximum expression by drawing a minimum number of features.
The artist manages to create resemblance without copying the image of the person but radier carving it with an instant touch.
Striving to catch the most characteristic features of the person, the artist is not afraid to move away from the actual appearance. He in fact recreates the image of the person in new proportions. Harutyun has always liked to draw people and he has done that everywhere. By looking at his caricature you will immediately recognize Chalikyan's style — sharp and unexpected. Harutyun is not after merely creating the resemblance; he does with his models whatever he wants. And it couldn't have been otherwise; after all we are talking about grotesque, about caricature. Beyond Chalikyan's unes one can always see the inner content. Chalikyan is able to see in people not only that which is funny but also that which is human, while the images he creates can always be recognized at the first sight.
Harutyun is also successful in making sculptures. He uses extensively the light-and-shadow effects for portraying movement and unes and also for highlighting the most characteristic facial features of a person. He skilfully combines smooth surface on which the light slides freely and widely. Harutyun's sculptures express his strive to present the moral beauty of the person.

Honoured artist of Armenia, Vladimir Abroyan
