A visit to any Armenian Church, particularly one of the beautiful churches of modern and historic Armenia, will leave one breathless with its simplicity, austerity and grand sense of space and design that have over the centuries preserved the artistic and architectural integrity of ecclesiastical structures.
There is a very great difference between the Armenian style and a Russian, Greek, Georgian or Coptic Orthodox Church in which icon stands (a partition called an iconostasis), walls and alcoves portray images of Jesus Christ the Saviour, Mary the Mother of God and numerous saints and historical events in the life of the Holy Church.
What is the role of sacred images in early Armenian Christian piety?
How did the image or icon evolve as a distinctive artistic marking and adornment inside and on the exterior of Armenian Church buildings?
What is the relationship between art and faith, according to the Armenian Church fathers?
These and other questions are explored in this fascinating introduction to sacred art in the Armenian Church tradition.

FOREWORD

We Christians are people on a unique journey, seeking to reside eternally with our Heavenly Father. Every time we enter an Armenian church, we find it filled with signposts of our faith pointing the way to our destination -the Kingdom of God. These signposts include, among many: the music praising God and calling us to worship; the "dress" of the church, colorful vestments and the gold and silver vessels on the altar, revealing the beauty and glory of God; the incense ("Let my prayer arise in Thy sight as incense." Psalm 141) and burning candles reminding us that Christ enlightens the world.
One of the most important signposts in our church is the presence of holy icons. These are not only portraits or likenesses of people and events -these are living holy images which show a person or an event transfigured and already containing the essence of the divine. They are drawn according to the tradition of the Armenian as well as other Orthodox churches. Such graphic signposts remind us of our final destination.
The history of holy images of the Armenian Church is a long, rich, beautiful one portrayed in murals and illuminated manuscript art forms. In the West where these art forms also existed, a newer medium in iconography - that of stained glass - was born. This book presents the stories of those icons of our faith depicted in the stained glass windows which enrich the sanctuary of the Saint Mesrob Armenian Church of Racine, Wisconsin. The details of those unique images come together in these stained glass windows to convey so beautifully our Orthodox faith. The stained glass windows were not part of the original structure. They were designed by the pastor and funded by members of the congregation in order to help us understand and appreciate more fully God's divine presence in symbolism.
Thus, as we Christians continue our journey to His Kingdom, we can be sustained along the way by our faith and the beauty of our icons as reflected in these windows.Valerie Goekjian Zahirsky
