Commentaire :

The tenth century Armenian saint's Book of Lamentations (also known as The Narek or the Book of Prayer or Speaking with God from the Depths of the Heart) immediately occupied a pre-eminence in Armenian literature and spirituality which it has never lost. The prayers express the ecstatic distress of a heart, convinced of its sinful and creaturely unworthiness, overwhelmed by God's loving condescension.
On 12 April 2015 Pope Francis officially declared St Gregory of Narek a Doctor of the Universal Church, following a pronouncement of his intentions on 21 February 2015.

ETON COLLEGE LIBRARY is PERHAPS AN UNEXPECTED PLACE TO FIND SIGNIFICANT HOLDINGS OF EARLY ARMENIAN PRINTING: A COLLECTION OF SOME 650 VOLUMES BEQUEATHED BY THE ANGLO-ARMENIAN VIOLINIST MANOUG PARIKIAN (1920-1987). THE COLLECTION HAD UNTIL NOW BEEN THE LARGEST UNCATALOGUED COLLECTION OF EARLY ARMENIAN PRINTING ASSEMBLED BY A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL OUTSIDE AN INSTITUTION, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE COLLECTION OF ARMENIAN BOOKS PRESENTED TO WADHAM COLLEGE, OXFORD BY DR CARO OWEN MINASIAN OF ISFAHAN IN 1972.
In a 1988 letter to Paul Quarrie, then Eton College Librarian, C.J.E Dowsett, the first Calouste Gulbenkian Professor of Armenian Studies at Oxford, wrote, 'I must congratulate Eton on the acquisition of Manougs important collection. It may help some boys to get a fresh line on passages in Tacitus, Horace, Herodotus and Strabo, and encourage some to take up Oriental studies seriously.'
Nearly 30 years later, to mark the 350th anniversary of the printing of the first Armenian Bible by Oskan Erewants'i in Amsterdam in 1666-1668, the Parikian collection has now been catalogued by Dr Vrej Nerses Nersessian with the financial support of the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Bibliophiles and scholars as well as Eton boys may now explore its riches in an online catalogue available at www.etoncollege.com/CollegeLibraryParikianCollection.

Commentaire :

The origin of Christianity in Armenia has always been a matter of acute controversy. This is not surprising for there was no literature in the Armenian language during the first four centuries and therefore we have no contemporary written document concerning the beginning of Christianity in Armenia.
The present study is a working synthesis of the state of research on religious movements in the Armenian church from the fourth to the tenth centuries. Religious movements have been an integral part of the Armenian church, and their growth is a phenomenon which runs side by side with, often directly influencing, such well-known developments as the rise of authority, the growth of canon law, and the nature of church-state relations. The movements in the Armenian church played an important if diversified role in shaping Armenia's attitude towards Byzantium, Iranian interference in the country's religious life, the spread of Hellenism, and the Caliphate.

Commentaire :

All the Churches of the Christian Middle East produced illustrated manuscripts, but those of the Armenian Church are among the most important in terms both of artistic quality and the number of surviving examples.
Although none remain from before the eighth century, the large number of manuscripts extant from the following ten centuries bear witness to the development of a distinctive and attractive style — a fusion of Hellenistic, Byzantine and other eastern non/Christian traditions.
Most characteristic are the Gospel-books. The Gospels were held in particular veneration by the faithful, and Gospel-books were often sumptuous productions, designed for display and for use during the Mass. The illustrations were held to be almost as important as the sacred text itself, and artists were given considerable scope to show their skills. Sometimes there are just a few portrayals of the evangelists; but in several manuscripts very extensive picture cycles, running to several hundred illustrations, are included.
This book gives a detailed account of the circumstances in which the illuminated Gospel' books were produced, analyses of their pictorial content, and comprehensive descriptions of the thirty manuscripts (including some very rare and early items) in the British Library's collections.
V. Nersessian

PREFACE

Manuscripts from the Christian Orient (written in Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopic, and Armenian) constitute a major centre of excellence in the context of the British Library's Oriental Collections. The Christian Churches of the Middle East, dependent on the sacred narrative of the Scriptures as reflected in the Gospels, have always given equal importance to text and illustration. Within this ambience there developed distinctive artistic styles which combine Hellenistic, Byzantine and Near Eastern non/Christian traditions. But whereas the architecture of the eastern Churches has been the subject of much fruitful research, manuscript illumination as such has received more scanty attention.
Armenian illustrated manuscripts constitute one of the most important groups of codices pro/ duced by the eastern churches, both in relation to their artistic quality and as far as the number of surviving examples is concerned. Despite changing fortunes, periodic persecutions and wars suffered by the Armenian people some 26,000 manuscripts have survived covering a period from the 9th to the early i8th century; the most important collection being those of Erevan (13,836 items), Jerusalem (4,500 items), Venice (4,300 items) and Vienna (2,000 items).
Though less numerous, the British Library collection is highly representative and includes many rare and early items. Some of the manuscripts were already part of the (British Museum) Foundation Collections, others were acquired during the 19th and the earlier part of the 20th century by purchase, bequest and donation. Dr Nersessian's book will not only introduce the collection to a much wider audience but also fill an important gap in our knowledge of Armenian Gospel illustration as such. Dr Nersessian is in charge of the British Library's Christian Middle East collections and has for many years worked on this and on related subjects. The present book, which will be accompanied by an exhibition, is but one in a long list of similar research projects which include work on an exhibition and a catalogue presenting the Christian Orient and a Union catalogue of Armenian manuscripts in the United Kingdom libraries and institutions which will be published with the assistance of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Commentaire :

The Armenian hymnary contains some 1200 songs, all remarkable for their character and for their links, implied or actual, with Byzantine tradition, with Hellenic theatre, and with the pagan cults and rituals of the pre-Christian era. The present volume includes seven essays in English, French and German, reproduced with minor corrections from a variety of journals not otherwise readily accessible. Each carries a precis in English where necessary, and the Editor has provided an introduction. Included are essays on Komitas, the khaz notation system, khaz notation in Armenian manuscripts, the modes of Armenian music, Armenian folk music and psalmody, and current lines of research in the field. There are also reproductions of early manuscripts, as well as an extensive number of music examples and transcriptions in Western notation, together with original Armenian texts where relevant.
