 | Hagop Nersoyan was born in Aleppo, Syria, where he received his early education. He worked as a tutor and interpreter there, and was active in community affairs. He came to the United States in 1946, earned a Master's degree from the Berkeley/Yale Divinity School. He wrote a play, and also acted, once as Vartan Mamigonian, and once as Ara the Fair. Dr. Nersoyan served the Diocese of the Armenian Church in various capacities, among them as executive director of the ACYOA and superintendent of the church schools. He holds a special authorization to preach in the churches under the jurisdiction of the Primate of the Eastern Diocese. He received his doctorate from Columbia University with distinction, specializing in the philosophy of religion and ethics. He was married to Marie Mesrobian in 1954. In 1967 Dr. Nersoyan joined the Department of Philosophy of the University of Dayton where he also served as Director of Graduate Studies. He is the author of Andre Gide: The Theism of an Atheist (Syracuse University Press), and of two books (Delphic Press) on the faith and history of the Armenian Church. He has written in professional journals and more popular publications, and lectured on philosophy, religion and Armenian history. He was invited to Etchmiadzin in 1969 to give a series of lectures on the then recent trends in philosophy and theology in the West. Professor Nersoyan's areas of special interest are contemporary ethics, modern French and Indian philosophies. |
