Le Révérend Père Dr. Abel-Hratch Manoukian est né le 3 janvier 1959 à Beyrouth, Liban. Après avoir terminé l’école secondaire arménienne en juin 1973, il devient séminariste au monastère patriarcal d’Etchmiadzine en Arménie. Dès le mois de septembre 1973 il suit les cours du lycée et du collège théologiques jusqu’au 23 octobre 1979.
En décembre 1978 il est ordonné diacre par l’Archevêque Housik Santourian et le 8 juin 1980, prêtre de l’Église apostolique arménienne par Sa Sainteté le Catholicos Vasken I. Après son ordination, il reçoit le nom d’Abel, selon la vieille tradition de l’Église arménienne.
Sur la recommandation de S.S. Vasken I, Catholicos et Suprême Patriarche de tous les Arméniens, et à l’invitation de Son Éminence le Cardinal Dr. Franz König, il peut continuer ses études en tant qu’étudiant œcuménique à la faculté de théologie catholique de l’université de Vienne.
Il termine ses études théologiques au semestre d’été de 1978. Il obtient sa maîtrise en théologie le 2 avril 1978. Il prépare sa dissertation et travaille dans les études arménologiques jusqu’en juillet 1989. Son œuvre est publiée dans « Handes Amsorya », le journal de philologie arménienne des Pères Mekhitaristes de Vienne.
De juillet 1989 à juin 1991 il vit en Arménie où il dirige la section nouvellement créée par le Catholicosat, intitulée « proclamation de la foi chrétienne ». En même temps il organise à Erivan et à Etchmiadzine des cours de pédagogie religieuse pour la formation des adultes et donne des conférences de théologie fondamentale à l’université d’Erivan. Il soutient sa thèse auprès du Professeur Dr. E. Chr. Suttner et reçoit son doctorat le 25 janvier 1993 à Vienne.
En 1992 il commence son activité pastorale à Toronto et occupe le poste de vicaire général pour le diocèse arménien du Canada.
De 1992 à 1994 il donne des cours de patrologie à St Nerses, séminaire des prêtres du diocèse arménien de la côte est des États-Unis, à New Rochelle.
Depuis 1995 il est le curé de l’église apostolique arménienne de Suisse et poursuit la mission spirituelle de l’Église.

The present volume introduces the development of Canonization in the Armenian Church Tradition and professes strongly to canonize the Armenian Martyrs on the eve of the 100th Anniversary of 1915 Genocide Commemoration.

How will this joint canonization be conveyed with regards to the massive number of genocide victims? Will it be done through individualization or by the following decree: "All those who died for their Christian faith." It is important for the Armenian Church to take the latter approach, for it is only God who knows, as He is the one who sanctifies either a person or a collective, for their sacrifice and testimony of faith.

Of course, it would have been better if our Church had, many years ago, taken the necessary steps of enlightening our people as to why we needed to sanctify our martyrs, why their canonization is valuable to us now and to future generations as well.

Let this booklet be a small offering in fulfilling what this prospect essentially lacks.
