EDITORIAL PREFACE

For some time we have felt that, however widely we interpret the term 'research* for the purpose of the series of Research Pamphlets which we have been publishing since 1954, we cannot under this heading properly include a different type of study material which we are equally concerned to offer in the service of the mission of the Church. It has therefore been decided to commence a parallel series of Study Pamphlets, written on the sole responsibility of the author in each case, but selected by us in the belief that the papers thus provided offer viewpoints, challenges, and information highly stimulative of thought and study.
We have pleasure in now offering the first two numbers in this new series. This is No. 2. No. i is Christ's Preaching—and Ours by Michel Philibert.
The Director of the Division of World Mission and Evangelism in the World Council of Churches needs no introduction. Many are greatly indebted to Bishop Newbigin for the various books he has already published. This paper offers a thought-provoking contribution to the theology of mission.
We are grateful to the several publishers concerned for permission to quote from their books. The Bible quotations are taken from the Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible, published by Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd., copyrighted 1946 and 1952.

INTRODUCTION

THIS small essay is offered—as the title of the series indicates—as an invitation to discussion rather than as the announcement of conclusions. It arises from reflection on constant discussion of missionary problems and deals, I hope, with real issues. But, as the reader will quickly see, it lacks the depth and solidity which can come only where there is time for much wider reading around the issues discussed. It owes an immense amount to discussion with my colleagues on the staff of the World Council and to comments kindly sent in writing by many friends. Without a great deal of help and encouragement from Dr. Paul Loffler it would not have appeared at all, and to him I owe especial thanks. But I must emphasize the fact that it is a purely personal essay written in the hope that others more competent than I may decide whether it is useful.
It is addressed to those who are concerned with and committed to the missionary task. It is in no sense an apologia for missions; it is not addressed to those who ask 'Why missions?', even though some of their questions come up for hearing. It is an attempt to wrestle with perplexities which arise out of the present situation of missions for those most deeply committed to them.
It is not written to advocate any particular line of action, but rather as an effort to understand. No apology is needed for this. We must see before we can act rightly. If the vision is right, we shall know how to act. If this essay in understanding is at fault, the writer hopes to be corrected.
