Preface

It seems hardly possible that ten years have already gone by since the passing of His Holiness Karekin I, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. Wasn't it just yesterday that he was with us, spreading the joy of life and faith and hope that was so much a part of his being?
Karekin Vehapar had a larger than life personality that captured the hearts and minds of everyone. His eloquent speech engaged the listener completely and motivated young and old, Armenian and non-Armenian, scholar and laborer, men and women.
The final year of his Pontificate was largely spent in New York where he was receiving treatment for the cancer that ultimately took his life. Always in discomfort, sometimes in intense pain. His Holiness's thoughts nevertheless were always fixed on the Armenian Church and his flock. Throughout his life every spare moment he had was spent reading or writing. It was no different in New York. He was concerned that his illness was slowing the progress and renewal of the church in Armenia and worldwide. During this time he wrote several messages addressed to the people which were meant to be widely circulated.
In one of his first such messages, or "Pastoral Letters " as he called them, he explained his desire to remain in touch with the people: "I made this decision as a result of the last four months during my illness and weeks of treatment when I had the time to contemplate, to reflect, to meditate, to observe and analyze, and in a way condense my thoughts. I offer these thoughts as a response to our people who have expressed warm love for the Armenian Apostolic Church, for her spiritual center, the Mother Holy See of Etchmiadzin, and because I sense their desire to become better acquainted with their Holy Church on the occasion of the 17th Centenary. I have said on many other occasions that the 17th Centenary Commemoration 's primary goal is for the renewal and reawakening of our Church and the re-Christianization of our people through the teachings of our Lord's Gospel and the traditions of our Holy Apostolic Church. "
Faced with a serious and painful illness, nevertheless, his primary thoughts were of the church and the people.
In January 1999, six months before his death, His Holiness began a journal of daily meditations, which he titled "Life in Communion with God. " The journal was always with him, even during his hospital stays. These meditations would be the very last words he wrote. The journal is yet to be found. I hope and pray that it will be found so that it can become a part of his rightful legacy.
The Karekin I Theological and Armenological Studies Series, which was established by Haig and Elza Didizian, has published thus far nine volumes. Six more volumes are in preparation: three are nearly ready to go to press, with three more in the planning stages.
During Vehapar's Pontificate his closest assistant was Archbishop Karekin Nersissian, who subsequently was elected the 132nd occupant of the throne of St. Gregory the Illuminator. We express our thanks to His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, for his support and blessings and for his efforts to keep the memory of Catholicos Karekin I alive.
We express our thanks to His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, for his support and appreciation of our work, and his contribution of an introductory essay to two of the volumes published. Catholicos Aram was Karekin Vehapar s student and their brotherly association spans more than four decades.
We thank His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church in America (Eastern), for his continued support of the Karekin I series. His Eminence has facilitated the use of photographs from the Diocese's archives, for which we are most grateful.
A very special word of thanks to His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, for his boundless support of this project. His Eminence was Karekin Vehapar s student and received his Episcopal Ordination by his hand. Besides his own personal assistance, especially in theological questions, Archbishop Oshagan has made the Prelacy offices, including staff, available to us.
I am personally indebted to my colleague on this project, Dr. Vazken Ghougassian, who is a font of information about Vehapar s life and work. He prepared the Armenian portions of this volume and assisted in many other ways. He worked closely with Vehapar for more than 18 years. He was Vehapar's assistant in Iran and in New York, and Chancellor of the Holy See ofdlicia when Vehapar was Catholicos ofdlicia.
The final and most profound words of thanks go to Haig and Elza Didizian. They are two of Vehapar's dearest friends. They were with him throughout his illness. They knew how much the written word meant to Vehapar and his desire that his work would be published for the edification of the coming generations. Their financial commitment to this project is great, but what is even greater is their active participation in the completion of the project. They deserve not only my thanks, but the gratitude of all.
I end with words of love and appreciation for Karekin Vehapar, who was an important person and influence in my life and in the lives of my late husband, Pierre, and our son Michael, whose interest, knowledge and scholarship of the Armenian Church can most certainly be traced to the influence of Vartabed, Bishop, and Catholicos Karekin Sarkissian. May his memory shine forth always.

If I had to choose one word that personified His Holiness Karekin, the word would be Hope. He was so full of hope, so optimistic.
More importantly he was able to transmit hope to others. "Hope is a living power in us in so far as it reflects God's grace and mercy," he would say.
This volume, In His Own Words, is an introduction to an overall project which when completed, by the grace of God, will publish in a series the complete works of His Holiness, from the earliest days of his service to his last. In His Own Words is not meant to be a biography but rather a photo/narrative of his service and a celebration of his life. You will note that the volume does not progress in chronological order, but rather begins with his final and highest position as Catholicos of All Armenians, after the two introductory essays.
The project was born through a series of consultations amongst his closest friends initiated by Mr. Haig Didizian who knew that His Holiness wanted to be remembered through his works. The Catholicos was an avid reader and writer. The body of work he has left in three languages—Armenian, English, and French—is substantial. Thus far we have managed to bring together most of Vehapar's works, published and unpublished, including thousands of sermons, encyclicals, scholarly articles, speeches, lectures, forewords, and personal diaries from his early years. There remains one important work to be secured—his final work. In January 1999, six months before his death, Vehapar began a journal of daily meditations, which he had tentatively titled, "Life in Communion with God." The journal was always with him, even when he went to the hospital. I hope and pray that it will be found so that it can rightfully become a part of his legacy.
In selecting his words for this volume I have kept faithful to his style of writing, with minimum editing. I have kept his complex sentence structure because that is the way he wrote; when reading his words one can almost hear his voice. In segments that I translated from Armenian I have tried to keep his style and choice of words. As an example, although I prefer the English word, Catholicate, Vehapar never used that form. We often debated the Catholicate vs. Catholicosate question, but he never wavered.
At various times during his years of service Vehapar left hundreds of photographs with me, primarily for a number of books and publications I produced for him. The majority of the photographs used in this volume are from that collection as well as some obtained from the Holy See of Etchmiadzin, the Great House of Cilicia, the Eastern Diocese, the Eastern Prelacy, and family and friends. The task of reviewing, identifying and selecting from thousands of photographs was difficult and time-consuming. I made the final choice and take full responsibility for inclusions and omissions.
All of us associated with this project express thanks to His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, for the support he brought to this volume and his fatherly blessings for the overall project.
We are grateful to His Holiness John Paul II whose genuine love for Catholicos Karekin I can be perceived in the message he sent for this volume. They had immense mutual respect for each other that grew into a true friendship.
We also thank the Bishop of London, the Rt. Reverend Richard Chartres, for sharing his memories of the Catholicos with us.
We express our thanks and appreciation to His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, for his support by making the archives of the Catholicate in Antelias, Lebanon, available to us for research for the duration of this project.
His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, gave his wholehearted encouragement to this project and provided his active assistance in various ways. We are also indebted to His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, and His Eminence Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian, for their valuable support.
Thanks also to His Excellency Armen Sarkissian and Dr. and Mrs. Raffy Hovanessian; to Vehapar's brother Zohrab and sister Yester for providing photographs from the family's collection; to Diramayr Sirvart Sarkissian for providing us with Vehapar's personal archives from his early years; Arpi Tchebookjian, Haikanoush Mesrobian, Christopher Zakian and to Khajag Zeitlian who spent the better part of his weekends and evenings preparing the final design.
I am personally indebted to Dr. Vazken Ghougassian, my colleague on this project, whose judgment I value highly. Vazken knows Vehapar's life and work better than anyone. He worked with Vehapar for eighteen years in various capacities. A graduate of the Cilician Seminary, he was Vehapar's assistant in Iran and in New York, and Chancellor of the Holy See of Cilicia under Karekin II.
I don't know how to express my gratitude to Haig and Elza Didizian. There are no words. They are two of Vehapar's dearest friends. Their dedication to this project goes far beyond their financial commitment—it is a mission of love for them to which they bring their active participation. My words of thanks are not enough. They deserve the gratitude of all.
We were fortunate to be part of that generation to benefit from the life and service of Karekin Vehapar. We will never forget him. He brought us closer to God and made us proud sons and daughters of the Armenian Church. For the generations that follow, who will never see his sparkling eyes nor hear his impassioned speech, I hope the publication of his complete works will in small measure provide a picture of an extraordinary churchman who served his Lord and people with faith, hope, and love.

INTRODUCTION

This commemorative book is designed to preserve the events which took place during the pontifical visit of Catholicos Karekin II of the Great House of Cilicia during the months of June, July, and August of 1983.
It was a special and significant visit for our community. This was the first pontifical visit of Karekin II to the Eastern Prelacy churches, the community he served so faithfully prior to his election as Catholicos. It was, in a sense, a homecoming. It gave our community an opportunity to joyfully greet His Holiness, but also it was an opportunity to, finally, say farewell. In May 1977 when he left New York for the elections no one knew for certain whether he would return to his position, or remain in Lebanon to assume higher office.
Karekin Vehapar has touched all of our lives. He is a leader of great vitality and commitment and a person who has developed a deep understanding of mankind in general and his community in particular.
For us, personally, it was particularly satisfying to plan this visit together with the National Steering Committee. Vehapar has played a vital role in our life. It was more than thirty years ago, on a rainy February day, when a young thirteen-year-old student in Beirut went to Antelias to seek out the young Karekin Vartabed and invite him to lecture to the students of the St. Nishan School. He accepted eagerly, lectured eloquently, and left an indelible impression on everyone, and changed the course of my life forever.
It is our hope that this book will be seen as more than a book of photographs. Although photographs are an integral part, this volume is also rich in text, preserving not just visual concepts but words and thoughts and ideas. Through this book we hope our people will be able to share in the entire pontifical journey, rather than just a fleeting moment in an individual community.
We wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone who worked so diligently to make His Holiness' visit successful. We are indebted to the national steering committee, the local committees, and to the clergy and church and community organizations, for their cooperation, their compassion, their charity.
A very special word of thanks to Mrs. Suzanne Hagopian whose generous financial support made this volume possible. Her years of work and sacrifice for the Prelacy and for the Armenian community will long be remembered.
The seeds that Karekin II sowed in the hearts and the minds of the Armenian community as he traveled will mature and grow in the years to come.
We pray that God will grant us the endurance, the commitment, and the capacity to continue His work on earth serving the needs of all humanity.

Archbishop Mesrob Ashjian

Commentaire :

A phrase I read sometime, somewhere, was constantly In my thoughts as I worked on this volume. "A great man never reminds us of another." Perhaps it is that quality about Karekin Sarkissian which first caught my attention. Truly, he reminds me of no other.
I met Bishop Karekin Sarkissian many years ago in New Jersey. He was in the United States on a visit and I attended a reception in his honor. That first meeting, barely a few minutes of unimportant talk, left no impression upon me. I am sure I also made no impression upon him; in fact, I doubt that he even recalls that meeting.
The name Karekin Sarkissian was put out of my mind until a few years later when I heard the news that his election as Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America was imminent. There was much jubilation in the community when his election became a reality. The young, dynamic Archbishop Karekin Sarkissian was coming to New York and the community was ablaze with expectations.
At that time, I recall debating with many of my friends that building up grand expectations just on the basis of a single individual was a disservice to the community, and to that individual; no one person could be expected to fulfill the aura that had been built around Archbishop Sarkissian.
I met Archbishop Sarkissian for the second time after he had assumed his duties in the Prelacy offices in New York City. We soon found that we had a common love of books and theological questions. For the first time I encountered an Armenian clergyman I felt I could actually talk with, and conduct discussions, argue with vehemence, but always with love and respect for one another. During Archbishop Sarkissian's brief three and a half years as Prelate, my husband Peter, and our son Michael, and I developed a deep friendship with the Archbishop and our love for him grew. I think —I hope —he felt the same about us.
When Archbishop Sarkissian was elected Catholicos-Coadjutor of the Great House of Cilicia, I went to Beirut for his consecration. This book is a result of my stay in Beirut during his consecration festivities, and also in August, 1977, when together with Peter and Michael, I again went to Beirut. For the historical information concerning the Armenian Church I have relied heavily upon the works of Patriarch Malachia Ormanlan. For the history of the Clllclan See I have found the works of Puzant Yeghlayan most useful; I have also used Information from several booklets published by the Clllcian Sec and from private conversations with knowledgeable persons. Having said that, I want to emphasize that I am totally responsible for any errors In Judgment or fact that may have been inadvertently included. Let me also say that this volume Is not Intended as a historical reference book. I felt that the Inclusion of some of the interesting aspects of the Armenian Church would make this volume more valuable, rather than only a photo album of His Holiness' election and consecration.
During my stay In Beirut In May, 1977, I was the guest of the Shahablan family. The many kindnesses extended to me by Emily and Levon Shahabian and their son Garo, I will remember always. I know they acted out of their love for Karckln II, but in so doing, they earned my deep love and respect.
In August, 1977, when again in Beirut, Vehapar's dear aunt, Diramayr Sarkissian, opened the doors of her apartment to Peter, Michael, and me. To her, also, we owe much thanks.
Finally, I want to express my deep admiration for His Holiness Khoren I. One cannot even imagine the magnitude of the progress of the Cllician See since he became Cathollcos In 1963. Only a trip to Antelias can provide the proper perspective.
