L'auteur

PREFACE

This collection of papers presents results of a three-year research project on the Armenian history. The project has been implemented through funding support provided by the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (INTAS-project number 94-3758).
The research, carried out by scholars from Armenia and Europe, was coordinated by Prof. Gabriella Uluhogian of the Bologna University. The European partners were scientists from Universities of Italy, France and Switzerland. They have succeeded in exploring various documents on the history of political, cultural and economic relations between Armenia and Europe. Researchers from the Republic of Armenia (RA) have worked through the support and cooperation of the scholars from the above mentioned Universities.
In the course of three weeks, in cooperation with Prof. Gabriella Uluhogian, Dr. Azat Bozoyan and Dr. Pavel Chobanyan, researchers of the Institute of History and Oriental Studies of the RA National Academy of Sciences, have studied in the libraries and archives of Genoa, Venice and Bologna. They have accumulated materials on economic and political relations between Italian city-republics and Kilikian Armenia. Valuable documents on Armenian merchants and cultural workers have been explored in the archives dated from 17lh through 19th centuries. Mr. Bozoyan's and Mr. Chobanyan's papers specifically refer to these issues.
Dr. Bernard Outlier of the French CNRS has drawn the attention of specialists on the materials of archives of the "Missions Etrangeres" (Paris) and Capucins. Within the framework of this project Dr. Meruzhan Karapetyan and Dr. Elizabeth Tajiryan, scholars of Institute of History, have studied in these archives in cooperation with the French researcher. Mr. Karapetyan and Ms. Tajiryan have explored a rich material on political and cultural relations between Armenia and France. However, only a part of this material is presented in this book.
Prof. Valentina Calzolari of the Geneva University has studied some aspects of the relations between Armenia and Switzerland (humanitarian assistance of the Switzerland Protestant Church to Caucasus and Asia Minor and assistance provided to Armenians migrated to Switzerland in the 19th-20th centuries etc.). With the assistance of Prof. Calzolari, Prof. Vladimir Barkhudarian, Academician of the RA National Academy of Sciences, has studied the relations between Swiss humanitarian organizations with Armenia before and after the World War I. The research was based on documents preserved in archives of Geneva and Losan as well the Ghukassian Library of Geneva University.
This fruitful work has produced results: the authors have already published various considerables articles in periodicals. The aim of the book is to present only a part of the issues. This project, carried out by INTAS, opened remarkable and promising prospects for research.
